Snail Porn

This piece is done in acrylic and black felt tip pen.

I painted this as a replica of snails mating in the documentary Microcosmos Le peuple de l'herbe. I hadn't heard of this documentary until my brother in law asked that I paint this scene to help broaden my horizons. I ended up watching the entire scene of these two getting at it. It's actually a sad ending, neither reach climax. After nearly five minutes of the snails courting one another, one (very slowly) begins to climb the other-attaching their slimy bodies to one another.

Interesting Fact: Most species of snails are hermaphrodites and posses both reproductive organs but yet need a second snail to reproduce. It is very unusual for a snail to fertilize itself, I guess it's decent for those lonely nights :P

I prefer painting people with true emotions, each with very different features and unique qualities.

Painting snail sex is definitely something new for me.

I struggled tremendously in the beginning, after I painted the shells I couldn't grasp the texture of their bodies. To touch a slug, they're smooth but slimy. To look at a slug they have very obvious markings. I didn't texture their bodies completely because I didn't want it to look too "busy".

Overall I'm pretty happy about the outcome of this piece.

This poem really moves me. I feel Pablo speaks of a love that is unconditional, yet seems absurd. Maybe because of distance or maybe because of separation. The poet speaks of soul mates. That kind of love brings anguish, fear and paranoia, pain and fear of losing the one you care most for. So he creates a mask for him to hide behind, a safety net so he doesn't become hurt. "If suddenly you forget me, do not look for me-for i shall already have forgotten you" As you read on, Pablo clearly indicates that his love for this woman will never die, never subside. His love will persevere even once his heart is broken. "In me nothing is extinguished or forgotten"

Everything brings him back to her. Every scent, every beautiful image, every touch. A flower, a wrinkled log, sail boats reminds him of her in all her glory. Making it impossible for him to forget her.

Many people would argue the true meaning of this poem. Many believe this poem was about Pablo's exile from Chile, about his undying adoration for his homeland. The sights, sounds, tastes, all is beautiful to him.
